See and Learn More Word Pictures

See and Learn More Word Pictures is the third step in the See and Learn Language and Reading programme.

About this step

See and Learn More Word Pictures uses visually-based activities to help your child learn 55 new words that are common in children's early vocabularies.

When to start this step

See and Learn More Word Pictures is designed for use with children who have completed See and Learn First Word Pictures, i.e. children who understand and use a range of around 50 single words.

This pack is designed to be completed at the same time as See and Learn First Written Words which will help your child learn to read written words and phrases.

How do children learn more words?

See and Learn More Word Pictures is based on what we know about how children develop their language and reading skills, and learn new words.

Learning new words (vocabulary) is very important throughout language development. Each new word a child learns is a tool for thinking and communicating about their world.

Children learn new vocabulary during everyday activities and play, and they learn that the words used by people around them refer to the things that they are hearing, seeing, doing or feeling. They also develop an understanding of new words before they can produce the words.

As they learn more words (as their vocabulary size increases), children begin to develop their 'grammar' skills - their understanding of how words fit together in phrases and sentences. Children first begin to understand the meaning of two 'key' words combined in a phrase and then begin to use two 'key' words joined together.

See and Learn More Word Pictures aims to increase your child's vocabulary to a size that supports the progression to the 'two key word stage' of language development. The parallel step See and Learn First Written Words includes activities to encourage your child to learn two 'key' word phrases.

Vocabulary

See and Learn More Word Pictures helps children learn 55 new words, through vocabulary-building activities using picture cards. The illustrated words are typical at this stage of language development, because they are words that we use with children day after day. The activities are designed to give children extra opportunities to learn the meanings of these new words and to use them. The words include the names of objects and animals (nouns), action words (verbs) and other descriptive words (eg. 'big' and 'little' and 'up' and 'down').

The pack includes 52 picture cards to illustrate these words. Three of the words are not illustrated, as you introduce these as extra words to your child within the activities. The activity instructions explain how to do this.
