Matching More Word Pictures

Matching More Word Pictures is the first activity in See and Learn More Word Pictures

Why do this activity?

This activity will:

  • introduce your child to the new pictures in See and Learn More Word Pictures
  • help your child develop his/her understanding of these words

Is this activity suitable for my child?

This activity is suitable for your child if he/she has completed See and Learn First Word Pictures, or your child has an understanding of approximately 50 spoken words/signs and is able to match pictures to pictures.

Please remember to read the See and Learn More Word Pictures guidance before you start on this activity.

If your child is not yet using 50 spoken words/signs, you should use See and Learn First Word Pictures to help develop his/her vocabulary. If you are not sure how many early words your child can say or sign, you can use the Naming First Word Pictures activity in See and Learn First Word Pictures to assess your child's vocabulary of typical early words.

What do I need?

Materials

Vocabulary selection

Work through the baseboards as listed on the Matching More Word Pictures record sheet.

Work on more than one baseboard in a session if you are able to keep your child interested.

How do I do it?

  1. See and Learn activities published by Down Syndrome Education InternationalPlace the More Word Pictures baseboard in front of your child.
  2. See and Learn activities published by Down Syndrome Education InternationalShow the first picture card to your child. Say/sign the name of the object, action or description as your child looks at you and the picture.
  3. Ask "where's the ........?" and encourage your child to look at the baseboard to find the matching picture.
  4. See and Learn activities published by Down Syndrome Education InternationalHelp your child to find the matching picture, by guiding him/her to the correct picture on the baseboard.
  5. See and Learn activities published by Down Syndrome Education InternationalHelp your child to place the picture card on the same picture on the baseboard, and say/sign the word again.
  6. See and Learn activities published by Down Syndrome Education InternationalRepeat steps 2-5 with each of the picture cards.
  7. See and Learn activities published by Down Syndrome Education InternationalWhen your child has matched all of the pictures on the baseboard, praise your child and tell him/her that the game is "finished".

Extra words

Alongside the words on the picture cards, this activity also introduces the words: where, finished

What else could I do?

  • When using this activity, take turns matching pictures.
  • Look at and name the picture cards together and then post them into the See and Learn post box.
  • Hide the picture cards around the room, and encourage your child to go and "find" them. Then look at the picture cards together and name them.
  • Make a dice by temporarily fixing six of the pictures onto the sides of a small square box, roll it and see which picture has landed on top. Then say or sign the word.
  • Take photographs of the objects and actions and make your own picture books.
  • Point out and name the objects and actions as they occur in everyday situations.
  • Use the objects, names and actions in play activities (e.g. playing with a balloon, or dressing teddy in boots, dress, jumper or trousers) using the vocabulary over and over as you play.

Recording your child's progress

Note the date, activity and words used on the More Word Pictures session record.

On the Matching More Word Pictures record sheet:

  • the first time you use each set of words and baseboard, record the date in the 'first used in activity' column
  • when your child matches all of the picture cards on the baseboard without your help, record the date in the 'matched without help' column

When should I move on to the next activity?

When your child has completed Matching More Word Pictures with a set of four picture cards, you can start using this set of words in the next activity - Selecting More Word Pictures.

Continue practising Matching More Word Pictures with the remaining sets of words until your child can consistently match these pictures. As he/she is able to match each set, start using that set in Selecting More Word Pictures
