See and Learn First Word Pictures - Activities
See and Learn First Word Pictures
See and Learn First Word Pictures
is the first step in the See and Learn Language
and Reading program.
About this step
See and Learn First Word Pictures contains
four activities
to help children learn 60 common first words using pictures.
It is designed for children who are at the first stage of learning language.
This step also prepares children for learning to read by developing their visual
skills through matching activities. They will use these visual skills later in the
See and Learn Language and Reading program.
When to start this step
See and Learn First Word Pictures is designed for children
who are ready to learn their first words. They should be showing an understanding
of objects and what they do, and may be attempting to communicate by babbling or
using simple gestures.
Your child will be ready to start this step if he/she is showing an interest in
looking at photographs and pictures, such as in books.
If your child is not yet interested in looking at pictures, introduce them to these
words using everyday objects, toys and pictures, and read storybooks with your child.
How do children learn their first words?
From birth, we talk to our children about objects and events in their world. By
listening to what we say, children gradually begin to understand the meaning of
frequently-repeated words. They develop an understanding of these words before they
begin to use them.
Children who have Down syndrome, however, find it harder to learn
their first words by listen and will benefit from visually-based approaches such
as those used in See and Learn Language and Reading.
