See and Learn First Word Pictures - Guide to the activities

Activities

See and Learn First Word Pictures consists of 4 activities:

For full details, see the instructions for each activity by following the links.

Progressing through the activities

Begin by working through the activities in the order shown in the box with the first set of 4 picture cards shown on the Looking at First Word Pictures record sheet.

Once your child has looked at these pictures (Activity 1), can match them (Activity 2) and is showing that he/she understands the words on these picture cards (Activity 3), you can help your child practice naming this set of 4 words (Activity 4). At the same time, start looking at another set of pictures (Activity 1 - Looking at First Word Pictures).

This means that you can be working with your child on more than one activity at any particular time, but using different sets of pictures in each activity.

Following your child's lead

See and Learn Language and Reading is not a rigid program - you will need to be flexible and follow your child's lead. Individual children will make different rates of progress through the activities and take different lengths of time to complete See and Learn First Word Pictures.

While we encourage you to work through each activity as we describe them, some children do not enjoy matching and will go from Activity 1 to Activity 3 - they will be able to show you they have learned the words for the pictures by selecting the correct pictures.

Similarly, some children may have good understanding but cannot yet say or sign the word (Activity 4). While continuing with Activity 4 for the words your child understands at Activity 3, you can also move to the steps in the next stage consisting of See and Learn First Written Words and See and Learn More Word Pictures.

Because some children find saying words particularly difficult, we do not want to hold back their ability to learn to understand and/or read a wider range of words.

Recording your child's progress

Use the First Word Pictures record sheets to record your child's progress through the activities and plan his/her practice sessions.
