Matching First Written Phrases to Pictures

Matching First Written Phrases to Pictures is the fourth and final activity in See and Learn First Written Words.

Why do this activity?

Matching First Written Phrases to Pictures is the final reading activity in See and Learn First Written Words.

This activity will help your child to:

  • show you that he/she understands the meaning of the two 'key' word phrases that he/she reads

The activity is planned so that your child has to understand the meaning of both of the words in combination to achieve the task.

Is this activity suitable for my child?

It is suitable to complete this activity with a word set if your child has completed the other three First Written Words activities (Matching First Written Words, Selecting First Written Words and Naming First Written Words) for all four sets of words.

Please remember to read the See and Learn First Written Words guidance before you start this activity.

What do I need?

Materials

Vocabulary selection

Work through the sets of words in the order listed on the Matching First Written Phrases to Pictures record sheet.

Work on more than one set in a session if you are able to keep your child interested. You can repeat practicing the activity with the sets in any order.

How do I do it?

  1. See and Learn - reading and language activities for children with Down syndromeLay down the three or four of the First Written Words large picture cards.
  2. Give your child one of the First Written Words phrase cards.
  3. See and Learn - reading and language activities for children with Down syndromeEncourage your child to read the words on the card by pointing to the words and helping him/her as necessary.
Your child may only read the 'key' words in the phrase at first, but encourage him/her to learn the entire sentence over time as this will help to teach him/her the correct grammar for the phrase.
  4. Once your child has read the phrase on the card, repeat the phrase and ask, "where's .....?" or "who ....?"
  5. See and Learn - reading and language activities for children with Down syndromeHelp your child place the card on the blank space under the picture on the First Written Words large picture card, i.e. by repeating the phrase and guiding him/her to the right picture.
  6. See and Learn - reading and language activities for children with Down syndromeRepeat steps 2-5 with each of the First Written Words phrase cards.

What else could I do?

  • Play a 'two words together' memory game with your child, using only the individual word cards from earlier activities. Place four word cards out in front of your child. Ask your child to give you two of them, e.g. "Please give me cat and table".
  • Select two toys, e.g. a teddy bear and a doll. Give your child a relevant two-word phrase card, e.g. "doll is sleeping", and ask your child to carry out the action with the appropriate toys.

Recording your child's progress

Note the date, activity and words used on the First Written Words session record.
On the Matching First Written Phrases to Pictures record sheet:

  • the first time you use a phrase card and matching large picture card in this activity, record the date in the 'first used in activity' column
  • when your child matches the phrase card to the large picture card without your help, record the date in the 'selected without help' column

Only do this for the first, second and third phrase card that your child matches (or first and second card if only using three large picture cards). The last card was the only choice so did not give your child an opportunity to show his/her understanding of it. You will need to repeat the activity with this same set of words, and ask your child to match the phrases to the pictures in a different order to check his/her understanding of all four phrases in the set.

When should I move on to the next activity?

Your child has completed this activity when he/she shows consistent understanding of all of the two 'key' word phrases (i.e. he/she can match the phrase to the right picture by his/herself several times). Remember you will need to repeat the activity reading the cards in different orders for your child to show his/her understanding of all two 'key' word phrases.

Moving on to the next stage

When your child has also also completed See and Learn More Word Pictures, he/she is ready to move on to the next stage of the See and Learn program, which includes See and Learn First Sentences and See and Learn More Sentences.
