Naming More Word Pictures
Naming More Word Pictures is
the third and final activity in See and Learn
More Word Pictures
Why do this activity?
This activity will help your child:
- use spoken words or signs to request a More Word Pictures picture card.
Is this activity suitable for my child?
This activity is suitable for your child if he/she has shown consistent understanding of
four or more of the
words in the previous Selecting
More Word Pictures activity.
Use the words that your child has shown that he/she understands in this
activity, and at the same time continue the
Selecting More Word Pictures
activity with the other picture cards.
Please remember to read the See and Learn
More Word Pictures guidance before you start this activity.
What do I need?
Materials
Vocabulary selection
Select four picture cards from the words that your child has shown that
he/she understands in the previous activity -
Selecting More Word Pictures.
As your child shows that he/she can understand more words, introduce these
into Naming More Word Pictures.
Vary the pictures you use each session to keep your child interested.
How do I do it?
-
Place the mail box on the
floor/table and put the four picture cards in your bag.
-
Take a card from the bag, show
the picture to your child and say/sign the word.
-
Place the card picture-side up
on the floor/table. If your child reaches for it, ask him/her to "wait".
-
Repeat steps 2-3 with another
picture card.
-
Now ask your child 'which one
do you want?' You could now hold the cards up to encourage your child to ask
for one.
-
Wait, to give your child the
chance to either:
- reach for or point to a picture, or
- make an attempt at the word, or
- make an attempt at the sign
-
Repeat the word/sign, e.g. "rabbit, you
want the rabbit", as you give them
the picture card.
-
Help your child to
put the picture card into the mail box.
-
Ask your child if he/she wants to continue by asking,
"do you want to do this again?"
Repeat steps 5-8 with the remaining picture cards.
- Finally, show your child the empty bag, and tell him/her that the pictures
are "gone" and the activity is "finished".
What else could I do?
- You may notice your child using new words outside of this activity.
Use the spaces at the end of the Naming More
Word Pictures record sheet to
note any words your child uses that are not in the
More Word
Pictures vocabulary list.
- Use a More Word Pictures baseboard and
corresponding picture cards. Offer
your child a choice of two pictures to match on the baseboard. Again, wait
for an attempt at a word/sign before you give the picture.
- Lay four pictures on the floor, face down. Point to one of the pictures
and ask "what is it?" Help your child to turn the card over, and say what it
is.
- Offer similar
choices during everyday routines and play, e.g. at bath time ask your child "shall I wash
your hands or your feet?"
Recording your child's progress
Note the date, activity and words used on the
More Word Pictures session record.
On the Naming More
Word Pictures record sheet:
- if this was the first time you used the word in this activity, record the date in the 'date first used
in activity' column
- if your child produced any words or signs, record the date in the 'produced sign'
or 'produced word' column
Remember to record any extra words your child says/signs in the spaces at
the end of the Naming More
Word Pictures record sheet.
When should I move on to the next stage?
Continue practicing this activity until your child can spontaneously say or
sign (i.e. without prompting) all of the words in the
More Word Pictures vocabulary list.
When your child has completed the Naming More Word Pictures
activity he/she has
finished all of the activities in See and Learn More Word
Pictures.
Moving on to the next stage
If your child has not already completed
See and Learn First
Written Words he/she should work through the activities in that
step to learn to read words and recognize a selection of two 'key' word
phrases.
When your child has also completed all of the activities in both
See and Learn More Word
Pictures and
See and Learn First
Written Words,
he/she is ready to move on to the next stage in the See and Learn
Language and Reading program,
which includes two steps: See and
Learn First Sentences and
See and Learn
More
Sentences.
