Selecting More Word Pictures

Selecting More Word Pictures is the second activity in See and Learn More Word Pictures

Why do this activity?

This activity will help your child to:

  • develop his/her understanding of more spoken words and/or signs
  • show which words he/she understands

Is this activity suitable for my child?

This activity is suitable for your child if he/she child has completed the Matching More Word Pictures activity with the set of pictures you plan to use.

Use the words that your child has matched and at the same time continue Matching More Word Pictures with the other picture cards.

Please remember to read the See and Learn More Word Pictures guidance before you start this activity.

What do I need?

Materials

Vocabulary selection

Work through the baseboards as listed on the Selecting More Word Pictures record sheet. Work on more than one set in a session if you are able to keep your child interested.

You do not have to wait until your child can show that he/she understands all the words in a set before you introduce the next set. Vary the sets you use each session to keep your child interested. You can repeat sets in any order.

How do I do it?

  1. See and Learn activities published by Down Syndrome Education InternationalPlace the See and Learn mail box on the floor/table and put the picture cards in your bag.
  2. See and Learn activities published by Down Syndrome Education InternationalTake a picture card from the bag, show the picture to your child and say/sign the word.
  3. Place the card picture-side up on the floor/table. If your child reaches for it, ask him/her to "wait".
  4. See and Learn activities published by Down Syndrome Education InternationalRepeat steps 2-3 until all picture cards in the set are on the floor/table.
  5. Ask your child to "find" one of the picture cards by saying, "Find ..........."
  6. See and Learn activities published by Down Syndrome Education InternationalHelp your child to find the picture card and place it in the mail box.
  7. See and Learn activities published by Down Syndrome Education InternationalRepeat steps 5-6 by asking your child to "find" for the other card or cards.
  8. See and Learn activities published by Down Syndrome Education InternationalShow your child the empty bag. Tell your child that the activity is "finished". Praise your child for "good" looking/listening.
  9. You could ask your child if he/she would like to do the activity "again". Make sure you ask your child to find the picture cards in a different order.

Extra words

In addition to the words on the picture cards, this activity introduces the words: find, again

What else could I do?

  • Find real objects for the vocabulary shown in the picture cards. Encourage your child to find one of the objects, and put it in the bag or in the See and Learn mail box.
  • Encourage your child to develop his/her understanding of the action words shown in the picture cards in play or with toys, e.g. "let's kiss teddy bear".
  • In everyday activities, help your child show his/her understanding of the words shown on the picture cards, e.g. when dressing ask your child to find his/her 'pants' or 'sweater'.

Recording your child's progress

Note the date, activity and words used on the More Word Pictures session record.

On the Selecting More Word Pictures record sheet:

  • if this was the first time you used a picture card in this activity, record the date in the 'first used in activity' column
  • if your child found the picture card without help, record the date in the 'selected without help' column

Only do this for the first, second and third card that you asked your child to find. The fourth card was the final choice so did not give your child an opportunity to show his/her understanding of it. You will need to repeat the activity with this same set of words, and ask your child to find the picture cards in a different order to check his/her understanding of all four words.

When should I move on to the next step?

When your child shows their understanding of a set of More Word Pictures picture cards (by consistently selecting them three times in a row), he/she is ready to use those picture cards in the next activity - Naming More Word Pictures.

Continue the Selecting More Word Pictures activity with the remaining words. As your child shows consistent understanding of more words, introduce these words into Naming More Word Pictures.
