See and Learn Sentences 1 builds teaching activities around a series of 25 carefully structured and graded, short reading books that present new vocabulary, sight words and grammar rules. New vocabulary and sight words are taught and rehearsed using familiar matching and selecting activities. Word order and grammar rules are presented in reading books and practised in a sentence building activity.
Content
See and Learn Sentences 1 includes reading books, picture cards, sight word cards, sentence picture cards and sentence cards.
Reading books
The 25 reading books in See and Learn Sentences 1 are ordered, with later books building on the vocabulary and grammar presented in earlier books. The books are therefore taught in sequence with children working through the teaching activities with the vocabulary, sight words and grammar rules from one reading book at a time.
In See and Learn Sentences 1, we use reading books to introduce new vocabulary as well as new sight words and sentence structures. New vocabulary is introduced in themed books - for example "Outside", "At home" and "Look at the animals". Grammar rules are introduced in books with repeated examples of specific rules - for example, "Girls and boys" (plural -s ending and is/are) and "Look at the girl and the boy" (personal pronouns he/she).
The reading books increase in difficulty in small steps. They start at level 2 and progress to level 8 using the Hatcher grading scheme adopted by the Reading and Language Intervention for Children with Down Syndrome (RLI).

See and Learn Sentences 1 includes 277 sentence picture cards and 277 corresponding sentence cards. These support a sentence-to-sentence matching activity to confirm your child's understanding of whole sentences. The sentence picture cards also support a sentence building activity.
Activities
See and Learn Sentences 1 includes 10 teaching activities, which we work work through with the vocabulary and sight words from one book at a time:
Reading Books
The Reading Books activity introduces your child to new vocabulary and sight words, illustrates the meaning of simple sentences, encourages your child to repeat spoken sentences, encourages your child to think and to talk about the things presented in books and encourages your child to link things presented in books to things they see in everyday life.
Matching Pictures
The Matching Pictures activity helps to teach your child new words, teach your child to look carefully at pictures and to identify differences and similarities, and helps your child to generalise their understanding of what spoken words mean.
Selecting Pictures
The Selecting Pictures activity tests your child's understanding of spoken words, and continues to teach your child to look carefully.
Naming Pictures
The Naming Pictures activity helps to teach your child to say words when prompted by pictures for words they understand.
Matching Sight Words
The Matching Sight Words activity teaches your child new sight words and teaches your child to look carefully at written words and to identify differences and similarities.
Selecting Sight Words
The Selecting Sight Words activity tests that your child can link spoken words with the correct written words.
Reading Sight Words
The Reading Sight Words activity teaches your child to say sight words as they read them.
